California Dreamin' -- Mamas & Papas

All the leaves are brown And the sky is gray I've been for a walk
On a winter's day I'd be safe and warm If I was in L.A.
California dreamin' On such a winter's day

Stopped into a church  I passed along the way  I got down on my knees
And I pretend to pray You know the preacher likes the cold
He knows I'm gonna stay California dreamin' On such a winter's day

All the leaves are brown And the sky is gray I've been for a walk
On a winter's day If I didnt tell her I could leave today
California dreamin' On such a winter's day

They were living in New York City, which was having a particularly cold winter, at least by Michelle's standards as she was from sunny California. John would walk around the apartment at night working out tunes, and one morning brought the first verse of the song to Michelle. It was a song about longing to be in another place, and it was inspired by Michelle's homesickness.         (songfacts)
