After Beyoncé had an argument with her boyfriend, she thought to herself, "I don't need a man, I'm independent." And with that went into a studio on her own and recorded this song, which promoted female independence, both financially and relationally. Destiny's Child re-recorded it, altering some of the words to suit the film. The co-producer Jean Claude Olivier remembered, "The initial idea was just to remix it, but we ended up remaking the record completely." This then became the single and the version used in the film.
